In Environment : Kirloskar Eco Club

With an aim to make students aware of their responsibility towards environment and ensure this awareness reaches their homes, family and friends; KPCL, has started a new initiative in schools called Kirloskar Eco Club in 2007-08. Under this project, student members were enrolled and projects undertaken in each school. Projects on themes like Solid Waste Management, Bio diversity, Effects of festivals on environment were undertaken in 2007-08. In 2008-09 the theme was Water Management & Conservation.

The assessment of the projects was done by experts on criteria such as project selection, implementation, awareness programs conducted and results achieved etc. This brought out the best practices followed by each school in different areas, which were then shared with all schools to improve on their performance in the next year. To bring in a measurable impact we plan to continue with the Water Management and Conservation theme for the next few years.

Some of the best practices followed by the schools are:

  Water Management

Water filter put in the line for purifying/ cleaning the water.

Saline water principles used for watering the trees so as to save water, at the same time plants also survive.
Displaying dates of cleaning and next due date of cleaning of water tanks to simplify the monitoring.
Training students to repair taps and using their time for the same.
Using quick method of testing water at school level—Use of Litmus paper— based on pH value.
Use of chemicals for purification of water at school.
Conducting “Water Audit” at home front by students.
Allocating / distributing total activities into groups of students and supervisor to make the / task / project work easy.

Adopting a nearby school and propagate water conservation activities in that school.
Monitoring the progress and continuity of some good initiatives / activities by the Principal himself.
Communication of some good initiatives to all during “Prayer time”.
Washing and cleaning hands after lunch in the nearby tree or plant.
Special taps—knob type to save water during drinking at “Nal kondale”
